When innovation meets evolution, effective methods are taken from efficient to remarkable. Over the last few years, the growth in the number of applications for high and ultra precision machining as well as the demand for ever higher levels of machine performance in the seed sowing business has flourished with innovations helping to improve the sowing precision process.
It took 24 years in the business for an innovative businessman to determine that there was a radical need for seed sowing to be simplified. Owner of South African based ZR Auto & Development, Rodney Sachscame up with his version of a dry sower that delivers maximum sowing speeds while maintaining the high standards of sowing precision.
His invention, the Simplicity, is a small, compact, self-contained and highly accurate machine that caters for short runs, used in the horticultural industry, and long runs, which are marketed within the brasicka/vegetable and forestry industries.
Designed to sow seeds as small as begonia, to seeds as large as pine, this machine can be adjusted to sow single or doubles. “Seed change is a 30 second operation, while tray format change takes merely a minute,” explained Roddy. “Technically speaking, the Simplicity sows one row of the tray every 1.10 seconds.”
The Simplicity range is manufactured in a modular form, so it can be purchased as a plain sower or with
or without a dibber, as well as filling lines, cappers and watering system. All components are stand-alone
machines and can be added to the Simplicity sower as required. All the ZR Equipment is “Tailor-made around your requirements, the Simplicity is an ideal machine for African requirements,” said Roddy.
ZR Auto & Development’s history in the business is noteworthy. From 1984 to 1989 they serviced the local Forestry Nurseries in areas such as Ngodwana, Tzaneen, Richmond and Albert Falls. During that period, ZR Auto & Development concentrated on pre-germinating, separating and sowing viable seed. This suited the eucalyptus variety especially, meaning that the company was soon supplying their Fluid Drill Range to countries such as Chile, Uruguay, Australia and Argentina.
As eucalyptus seed are now of a higher quality plus the introduction of cloning has resulted in the Fluid Drill concept falling away. Hence ZR Auto & Development introduced the Dry Sower to their portfolio. It was soon producing a variety of machines, from complete automated sowers to smaller tabletop sowers.
This soon grew into the likes of the DS96, the Table Top and then the ever-popular Simplicity.
“The Simplicity range incorporates twenty-four years of knowledge in the Nursery industry. A must have for all nursery and agricultural businesses wanting precision in sowers” said Roddy.
The Simplicity has its own air supply, therefore does not need a remote compressor. It is so simple you literally put it on a table, plug into a 220volt supply and start sowing “It takes 30 seconds to change the seed run and
two minutes to change the head of the machine to suit a different tray configuration if being used,” explained Roddy.
Auto & Developments proudly boasts the all the machines are manufactured
using the highest quality of materials that are non corrosive and maintenance
